JANUARY SKI DAY - MANDATORY HELMET REQUIREMENT

E-mail Print
Parents, please note:
The National BSA Health and Safety Department has recently issued a revision to their Winter Sports policy that helmets are now mandatory for downhill skiing & snowboarding and...... recommended for sledding and sliding devices.

Reference:
See Winter Activity Section of the Guide to Safe Scouting - Updated 8/19/09 - Line Item 3

National is not bending on this. With limited industry supplies of helmets this season (economy has curtailed manufacturing) and short notice, this ruling will present a challenge for our January 24, 2010 District Event at PNS and January 31, 2010 Council event at Mad River Mountain.  Both Perfect North and Mad River have been able to procure an additional, but small supply of rental helmets; however not close enough for our participants projected.  We are working with both resorts to determine the exact number of rental helmets available to us for our events and rental price.

Some solutions:

#1.  ANSI Standard, hard shell ski/board helmets are to be used.   We will also allow hard shell helmets used in such sports as in-line skating and skateboarding.  Hard shell bike helmets (without visors or rear extenders) may be considered.  Start having your Scouts talk to their boarding friends and see if they can borrow a suitable helmet for our events.

#2 Local ski shops and resorts have upcoming equipment swap shops where used and new helmets may be for sale. There are also on-line suppliers for review under Google searches. A new and effective recreational ski helmet ranges in price from $60 - $100.  Used  helmets will be less...watch for cracks and wear in used helmets.

#3 Check local consignment sporting goods stores such as "Play-It-Again Sports

Local & Upcoming Swap shops include:
Valleywood Ski Shop - Kettering - October 17-18 ...see their web site at www.valleywoodski.com

Mad River Mountain - Bellefontaine Ohio - November 1...see their web site at www.skimadriver.com

Perfect North Slopes - Lawrenceburg, Indiana - November 6-7-8...see their web site at www.perfectnorth.com

We will soon be starting a Twitter site to keep everyone regularly updated and will do our utmost to be fair regarding resort helmet rental allocations.   The early reservations will be given 1st crack at the rentals so start to get those in to Council office.  Again, we will have to allocate even to those early registering units dependent on unit size.

For those units who have been accustomed to skiing and snowboarding in the past years, perhaps now is the time for participants to consider investing in a permanent helmet which depending on the age/size of Scout could last a long time.

We will appreciate your patience in advance.  We hope to pull off another successful year of sking/boarding and tubing!

Troop 236 Gourmet Cooking Campout Results 2009

Once again he patrols did a great job  of cooking excellent meals on April 4th at Possum Creek Metropark.   The Panthers cooked an assortment of Mexican foods complete with hats and a piñata.  The Psychotic Platypuses had Asian chicken, stir fry, rice cakes, salmon dip with crackers, and cobbler.  Their site was decorated with lights.  The Raccoons cooked stir fry.  The patrol members wore Chinese hats.  The Scorpions had German brats, red cabbage, potato pancakes, and black forest surprise.  The Screaming Eagles cooked jambalaya and beignets.  The Vikings had a Mongolian Grill with an assortments of items including calamari.  The Wolverines cooked Hawaiian shish kabobs.  We entered their kitchen by passing through a pathway of tiki torches and were led in by a guide like on Survivor.

Summer Camp

E-mail Print

We would like for all  members to attend summer camp.  There is campership money available
through the council and through the troop.

Here is the payment schedule that I came up with for Summer Camp 2008.

Date
Returning Campers
 First Year Campers (Kid Cricket):
January 29th $36.00 $43.00
February 26th $36.00 $36.00
March 25th  $36.00 $36.00
April 22nd $30.00 $30.00
May 21st $30.00 $30.00
June 10th $30.00 $30.00
Total:$198.00
$205.00

For the campers that are not going to use the payment schedule. We must have the
deposit by February 26th in order to avoid a $10.00 additional fee.

Camper-ship forms for returning campers must be filled out and turned back in by
February 26th. If returned after February 26, forms must be turned into Janet at the scout shop.
FYI- New scouts can turn in their paper work after these dates and will still receive the
early-bird council strip. I also think depending on when the new scouts join the troop
that they follow the remaining payment schedule or they pay $103.50 at sign up and the
balance due by June 10th.

For First Year Campers, the extra $7.00 is to cover the cost of the kits for the
handicraft merit badges.

Scouting Quotes...

"In the 30 years that I've been doing this for a living, I've never had a parent say to me, 'I regretted the time I spent with my son or child in Scouting.'"
