This award memorializes George C. Carson. Mr. Carson was a long-time Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 236. As an Assistant Scoutmaster, Mr. Carson was dedicated to the welfare of the boys, to making sure that each boy felt special here, and to making sure that everything that needed to get done got done. Mr. Carson passed away in June of 2000 at the age of 49 after a year-long bout with cancer. In presenting the first George C. Carson Spirit of Scouting Award to Mr. Carson in May of 2000, Eagle Scout Chris Weber said the following:
"Thinking back, Mr. Carson was a prominent figure in my growth and development as an individual and as a scout. His examples showed me how to share my knowledge with others, and how to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. He showed me how to hold pain in and not to complain. But most importantly, he taught me how a true role model should be. One of the many life skills that I learned form Mr. Carson is dedication. At one point in time, when I was bridging over, Doc was unable to come to our table and visit. Mr. Carson was there the whole time telling the types of things that are done in boy scouts and how much fun it is. I will remember that day forever. Another example of Mr. Carson's dedication to our troop is that in the summer camp of 1999, when Doc was unable to act as scoutmaster because he had to act as the aquatics director, Mr. Carson stepped up and performed all the necessities that a scoutmaster must do at summer camp. But the one thing that always stuck in my mind is the exemplary way that Mr. Carson always displayed all twelve points of the scout law."
